Team WAVE

Team WAVE's ultimate goal is to fund Leadership Training through sailing for girls and young women.

Our mission of Racing to Raise Awareness is to promote abuse free environments through education and mentoring the next generation.

Team WAVE is a group of women who want to make a difference in the world, by starting at home. Community is the foundation that we hope to build upon. Involving girls and young women in a sport that is generally thought of as male territory, breaking through the barriers, and giving girls the tools they need to be able to learn, to be treated as an equal. And at the same time exposing them to a sport that may possibly become a career one day, in an economy where sailing and tourism play an important role.

Team WAVE is seeking a corporate partner who is interested in promoting girls in sailing while promoting their business goodwill within the community. The opportunity to involve the corporate executive and employees in sailing and leadership training would be a bonus to Team WAVE.

BVI - March 2014

Team WAVE  once again competed in the BVI Spring Regatta, Racing to Raise Awareness and help make a difference in the fight against domestic violence globally. We also placed third in our division, and raised approximatley $1200 for the BVI Family Support Network.

We raced aboard a Beneteau First 47.7  kindly donated by our old friend Peter Mapstone. Our goal was to raise funds to donate 100 percent to The Family Support Network, a non-profit organization that offers shelter and support for victims of domestic violence in the BVI. The Support Network is headed up by Judith Charles, and we did a collection of womens and kids clothing, toys, toiletries to donate to the cause. Donations can still be brought to Nanny Cay D Dock, to Manu Kai, where we will gratefully receive and take to the Network.

Team WAVE is a multinational crew of talented offshore women sailors who have been competing on the Caribbean circuit for many years, meeting with Women's Support Networks on each island to see how we can make a difference. In 2006, Team WAVE won our Class and Division in the Centennial Newport-Bermuda Race coming 12th overall out of 250 boats and being the first women in the 100 year history of the race to do so. We have raced over the years in our well loved Frers 49 'Synergy' in Antigua Race Week, Heineken Regatta and BVI Spring Regatta. Team WAVE raised and donated $2500 to Safe Haven of St Maarten, and we were able to do the same in 2011 for the BVI Family Support Network. With the fantastic support from the business community and personal donations, they have enabled us to Race to Raise Awareness.

Team WAVE's goal is to highlight the need to support mistreated women and children locally and internationally. Team WAVE Founder Val Doan states, "There is a worldwide epidemic of violence against women and children, whether through domestic abuse, rampant rape or exploitation in war torn and third world countries. By competing with our all-female crew we are racing to raise awareness and hope to help do our part by raising funds and bringing into focus a global awakening to this worldwide epidemic."
